Understanding Oak Wood Grading
Choosing the right grade is about the visual character of the wood, not its structural quality. Whether you prefer a clean, contemporary look or a floor full of natural history, we offer three distinct grades to suit your interior design.
Prime (AB) Grade
Prime grade is the highest quality oak available. Sourced from the center of the log, these planks offer a sleek, modern aesthetic with minimal interruptions.
Appearance: Very consistent color with little variation between planks.
Knots: Only occasional “pin knots” (usually under 10mm).
Sapwood: Virtually no sapwood allowed, ensuring a rich, deep oak tone across the entire floor.
Best For: Minimalist interiors, formal dining rooms, and high-end modern developments.
Rustic Grade
Our most popular choice, Rustic grade celebrates the natural life of the oak tree. It features the beautiful “imperfections” that make real wood flooring unique.
Appearance: Significant color variation and visible grain patterns.
Knots: Large, healthy knots and some filled “dead” knots that add texture and soul.
Character: May include small shakes (surface cracks) and silver grain (medullary rays) which are hallmarks of authentic oak.
Best For: Traditional homes, barn conversions, and spaces where you want a warm, “lived-in” feel.
Antique / Character Grade
This grade sits between Prime and Rustic but is processed to look as though it has been in place for decades. It provides a “reclaimed” look without the structural risks of old timber.
Appearance: Heavily textured with aged edges and a tumbled feel.
Details: Features larger knots and more pronounced grain definition, often enhanced by hand-finishing.
Best For: Period properties, country cottages, or adding instant history to a new build.
